Where to buy cheap fabrics in India?

Markets in Mumbai and Delhi, with their hundreds of dealers in small shops through narrow lanes, are sometimes half the price of the online suppliers. Here is my recommendation:

  1. Mumbai

Zhaveri Bazaar, with MJ and Crawford markets are considered the largest fabric markets in Asia. Here you will also get wholesale jewelry, both real gold and precious metals and gems and artificial. Elco arcade and Bandra are great for shopping for ready made clothes. Dharavi for leather goods and Nagpada for Handbag and accessories. Below is a fur supplier in Zhaveri Bazaar. Unfortunately, a lot of their fabric is from China but they do get it in large enough quantities that its actually quite cheap.

2. Delhi

While Mumbai was just a bunch of disconnected islands before the British connected them, Delhi has been the centrepoint of global trade in fabrics, going back thousands of years to the Silk Trade Route in Roman times.

Places like Lajpat Nagar, Chandini Chowk, Nehru Place and Tibetian Market are all great places to visit.

Tip: Dont be overambitious. Relationships take time to build. Measure success in small steps. You dont have to setup appointments with 100 suppliers especially if your initial quantities are going to be miniscule.

If however you cannot make it physically, you can find suppliers on Indiamart.com. Others like Amazon and others I find expensive.
